    Answer: The process of forming compost with the help of various worms like redworms, white worms and other earthworms, is known as vermicomposting.

    3. Which component of air gets ‘used-up’ during the process of photosynthesis?

    Answer: Carbon dioxide is used up during the process of photosynthesis.

      4. Suggest any five activities that can help to save the environment.

    Answer: Five ctivities that can help to save environment are :

    (     (i)  Do not use plastic

    (    (ii)  Use kitchen waste to make compost

    (   (iii)  Use cleaner fuel                                                                                                                       (iv)  Afforestation

    (    (v)  Segregate wastes for disposal in eco-friendly way

    5. How does nature maintain a balance, between the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere?

    Answer: Nature maintains a balance, between the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere by the two processes i.e., breathing and photosynthesis.

    E. Answer the following questions.

    1. Distinguish between

    (a) autotrophs and heterotrophs

    (b) decomposers and scavengers

    Answer (a) :  Autotrophs
    The green plants, which prepare their own food (glucose), are called producers or autotrophs.

    Heterotrophs
    Animals cannot prepare their own food. They have to depend on plants for their food. They are called consumers or heterotrophs.

    Answer: (b)

     (1) There are some organisms which derive their food from dead and decaying plants and animals. They are called decomposers. Example: Fungi and bacteria.

    Scavengers

     They consume dead bodies of animals. They are called Scavengers. Example: Crows, Jackals, Kites.

    2. State the difference between biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials. Give one example of each.

    Answer:

    Biodegradable materials – These are materials which can be broken down into simpler substances by micro-organisms. Example: paper and cloth 

    Non-biodegradable – These are materials which cannot be broken down into simpler substances by any micro-organism. Example: Plastic

     

    3. How does decomposition of dead animals turn out to be useful?

    Answer: The dead animals decomposed into minerals. These minerals get mix up with the soil and then again used by plants for their growth.

    4. Why is Rain water harvesting a ‘ray of hope for overcoming the present ‘scarcity of water’ in cities?

    Answer: Rain water harvesting is a way through which we can collect a lot of rain water which are wasted during the rains. Rain water harvesting can supplement the requirement of water in cities and raise the sub-soil water level. In this way rainwater harvesting is array of hope for overcoming the present scarcity of water in the cities.

    5. Why do buffaloes cool themselves in water during summer?

    Answer: Buffaloes have black coloured skin which is good observant of sunlight and they have no sweat glands. So, they feel hot. To get themselves cooler, they get into water.

    6. Draw a diagram that shows the relationship between the biotic and the abiotic components of the environment.
