2. Describe one test each for detecting the presence of the following in food:
(a) Protein

Answer - (a) Protein - Material Required : Test Tube, Dropper, Mortar and Pestle, Concentrated Nitric acid
Procedure : Crush the bean seeds with the help of mortar and pestle and make a suspension by adding some water. Put little suspension in a test tube. Now add a few drops of concentrated nitric acid into test tube. If the colour of the suspension changed and appears yellow, it indicates presence of Protein.
(b) Starch - Required Material : Test tube, Dropper, Iodine solution
Procedure : Take the small amount of material which is to be tested. Add iodine solution with the help of a dropper . If the colour of the material turns to black/blue, it indicates the presence of starch.
(c) Fats - Material required : Paper
Procedure : Rub the material on a dry paper. If you find translucent mark on the paper, it indicates the presence of fat.
3. Why do We need Proteins and how do thy affect our health?
Ans - Proteins are body building food. Protein helps in building up the developing tissues. Proteins also repair the damaged tissues. A protein rich diet help in timely growth of children and make them stronger. Deficiency of Protein causes different type of disease like kwashiorkor, Marasmus and improper growth of body.
