(A) Fill in the blanks.

Answer:

(1)The process of grouping objects of similar properties is called  classification.

(2) Anything that occupies space  and has a mass is called matter..

(3) In the gaseous state of matter, the constituent particle have very little hold on one another

(4)Light does not pass through a black board as it is an  Opaque object.

(5) Smell of perfume reaches us by the  process of diffusion.

(B) Write true or false for the following sentences:

Answer:

 (1) Air is a man made material.  False.

(2) A thin polythene sheet is transparent. True.

(3) Pebbles float on water. False.

(4) Diffusion is the mixing of the particles  of two materials, on their own.  True.

 (5) Oxygen gas is slightly soluble in water. True.

(C) Tick (✓) the correct option.

(1) The state/states of matter, that have both a fixed shape and a definite volume, is/are ______.

i. Liquids and solids

ii. Gas and liquids.

iii. Solids only.

iv. Liquids only.

Answer:- (c) solids only.

(2) Your book is made up of matter, because it ______.

i. Has mass

ii. Occupies space.

iii. Occupies space and has some mass.

iv. Does not float on water.

Answer: (c) occupies space and has some mass.

(3) Which of the following is an opaque material?

i. A piece of wood

ii. A plane, thin sheet of glass

iii. Pure air.

iv. Water in a clear glass container.

Answer: (a) a piece of wood

(4) In which of the following cases would diffusion be the fastest?

i. Gas in another gas.

ii. Liquid in another liquid.

iii. A solid in a liquid.

iv. A gas in a liquid.

Answer: (a) gas in another gas.

(5) Which of the following is insoluble in water?

i. Mustard oil

ii. Sugar

iii. Carbon dioxide

iv. Common salt

Answer: (a) mustard oil.

(D) Answer the following questions in brief.

(1) Define the following:
(a) Natural materials
(b) Transparent materials

Answer : (a) Natural materials - Natural materials are substances or resources that  occur naturally .

(b) Transparent materials - Substances that allow light to pass through them are called transparent material.

(2) Name any three materials that are (i) transparent (ii) opaque in nature

Answer:

(i) Transparent materials – Quartz, Glass, Polythene.

(ii) Opaque materials – Brick, Wood and Iron sheet.

(3) Which state of matter (i) can (ii) cannot easily change its shape and volume Why?

Answer -

Gas state: Gas particles are widely spaced and have weak intermolecular forces. They move freely and rapidly, allowing gases to easily change both shape and volume

Solid state: Particles in a solid are closely packed and have strong intermolecular forces. This arrangement gives solids a fixed shape and volume.

(4) Why do materials diffuse into each other?

Answer:- Materials diffuse into each other due to the free movement of the  particles of such material. Example - Gases

(5) Define the term ‘solubility’. How does it change on increasing the temperature of water?

Answer: Solubility –  Maximum amount of a substance that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent is called solubility.

The solubility of substances  tends to increase with an increase in temperature.

(6) Name three materials that are (i) soluble (ii) insoluble in water.

Answer:-

(i) Three materials that are soluble in water are –

  • Orange Juice

  • Salt

  • Sugar

(ii) Three materials that are insoluble in water are –

  • Sand

  • Oil

  • Beads

E. Answer the following questions.

1. Why do solids have a fixed shape and a definite volume?

Answer: Solids have a fixed shape and a definite volume because the particles in a solid are tightly packed and strongly attracted to each other, preventing them from easily moving or changing their positions.

2. Briefly describe an activity to show that pure water is a transparent liquid.

Answer :  To show that pure water is a transparent, simply take a clear glass and fill some water into it. The transparency of water will be evident as you can see anything through the glass

3. Describe an activity to show that a solid can diffuse slowly into a liquid.

Answer - :Experiment  to demonstrate the slow diffusion of a solid into a liquid –

Take two beaker and fill some clean water into it. Now put few drops of ink into one beaker and few crystal of potassium permanganate in another beaker. Colour of water of both the beaker start changing due to diffusion but the colour of second beaker with crystals of potassium permanganate changed after first beaker . It shows slow diffusion of solid into liquid.

4. What is saturated solution ? How can one prepare a saturated solution of common salt in water ?

Answer : A saturated solution is a solution that has reached its maximum capacity to dissolve any given substance  at a given temperature and pressure.

To prepare a saturated solution of common salt in water

Take a clean container. Gradually add common salt into the container while stirring the water continuously. Continue adding salt until no more salt can dissolve, and some salt remains undissolved at the bottom.

The resulting solution is a saturated solution of common salt in water.

5. Suggest one activity to show the effect of temperature on the solubility of a solid in water.

Answer:- Take two glasses and half of the  first glass with cold water and fill half of the second glass with hot water. Now add equal quantity of salt in both of the glass  and stir well to dissolve the salt into water.  Repeat adding the salt into the glass. No more salt can dissolve into water after some time but we can observe that amount of salt dissolve more in hot water as compared to cold water. It shows solubility increases with increase of temperature.

Value based questions

Q.Neha went to a village to attend the marriage of her cousin. She was very much upset when she observed that there was no cleanliness in, and around, many houses. She used a gentle, polite and slow approach to make the villagers realise the importance, and necessity, of keeping their surroundings neat and clean. She was happy to find the village very much cleaner by the time she left. While leaving, she told her cousin that her success was similar to that of blue ink drops which slowly make the water in a bowl uniformly light blue when they are dropped in it.

1. State the values displayed by Neha.

Answer:- Neha displayed the value of cleanliness by making the villagers realise the importance and necessity, of keeping their surroundings neat and clean.

2. Name the process through which blue ink drops make the water uniformly blue.

Answer:- The process by which blue inks drops make the water uniformly blue is diffusion.
